A 2019 study of students in 3rd to 5th grades showed that students lost, on average, about 20 percent of their school-year gains in reading and 27 percent of their school-year gains in math during summer break.

Two years later, students and schools have faced a year away from school campus and full of remote learning during the pandemic. Faced with online learning, isolation, anxiety and stress, students are falling behind. The research is clear: students have learned less this year than in a typical school year.

We created a free infographic about how this year’s unprecedented learning loss relates to the “summer slide”: a phenomenon in which researchers say students “fall back” over the summer from where they’ve been at the end of the previous school year. The summer slide disproportionately affects low-income students and students of color, and this has also rung true for pandemic-related learning loss: nationally, students of color could be six to 12 months behind their normal grade level by the end of June 2021, compared with four to eight months for white students (McKinsey, 2020).

A focus on student mental health and wellbeing is critical to their success. Download our free infographic to learn what schools can do to mitigate learning loss in the 2021 summer slide and keep students safe as they return to school in the fall.
