Supporting US districts with CIPA requirements
28th February 2017
Passed by Congress in 2000, The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires the use of internet filters or a “technology protection measure” to protect students from accessing indecent or harmful content via the internet. In order to achieve a number of federal funds offered by Government, K-12 schools and libraries must comply with the CIPA requirements.
what are CIPA requirements?
- Creation of an internet safety policy
- To block or filter any harmful, dangerous or pornographic content through a technology protection measure (usually a filtering system)
- Monitor all student activity on all devices used by the school/district
- Educate minors (under 17s) about appropriate behavior online, including the safety and security when using electronic mail, social media or any other form of direct electronic communication and raising awareness and response around cyberbullying
how Education Pro supports CIPA requirements
Education Pro provides districts with the internet safety tools to create and enforce their superior internet safety policy as part of CIPA requirements. With dedicated keyword libraries created in conjunction with a number of international charities, student activity is monitored using keyword detection and real-time monitoring. Any inappropriate behavior detected is captured using a screenshot and reported to a member of staff.
Alongside using a filter to block illegal content, monitoring student activity allows teachers to discuss issues that are captured and helps to educate students about appropriate behavior online. Teaching staff are able to offer a counter narratives and teach good digital citizenship. For more on digital citizenship read our whitepaper here.
