make technology work for you with classroom management tips

30th September 2016

We’ve all heard this about students: “If they are engaged, they are managed.” And this is absolutely the truth. But we still need rules, routines, trust, and student ownership to make a classroom run smoothly and effectively, especially with the presence of technology and digital devices. These handy classroom management tips will address the practical aspects of managing a classroom, and possibly some new ideas to spice up your current routine.

Classroom Management Tips:

Tip 1: Find three, then ask me

Encourage kids to find three other ways to get the answer than raising their hand and asking the teacher. Examples could be search engines, books, a neighboring student. This method instills the student with the practice of using resources to find solutions on their own.

Tip 2: Showcase good work

When you catch a student in the act of doing good work on their computer or device, display it on the classroom big screen or projector. This lets the student know that you noticed their hard work, and shows the rest of the classroom an example of good behavior. Also, it encourages more students to try their hardest so that they too can get recognized publically.

Tip 3: Talk & Listen

Have students use a software tool, such as Impero Education Pro, to record notes, lessons, vocabulary lists, etc. then the student can play his own recording back to help remember the information. This method is especially good for auditory learners.

Tip 4: Re-Teach

Often during a lesson, the teacher finds that there were many similar questions about the subject matter, or all the same questions missed on a quiz. This is a good indicator that the information needs to be taught again in a different format. Taking a quick quiz on student devices can help poll students on learned concepts to help inform comprehension.

Tip 5: Quick quiz

As mentioned in tip 4, giving a quick quiz at the end of a lesson can help the teacher formulate the level of comprehension of a concept. Exit exams are also a great strategy. Give students a list of questions at the beginning of class. Teach a lesson, then have the students answer those questions right before they leave.

Tip 6: Let them drive

During a lesson, put a student in the driver’s seat by letting them teach or demonstrate a concept. This gives students validation in their skills, makes them more responsible, and re-enforces knowledge.

Tip 7: Focus the class

When the classroom gets off task on a digital project,or students start wandering away from paying attention, turn off all the websites except the one you want them to look at. This allows you to ensure all eyes are on important content. Software programs like Education Pro make it easy to set one website on all student devices with one click.

Tip 8: Assess your effectiveness

After a lesson, reflect on student behavior during class. Think about the percentage of students were wandering to entertainment or personal websites. Then think about how the lesson could have been made more engaging to keep attention on you.

The Impero Education Pro software solution provides a plethora of tools that allow the teacher to put all of the classroom management tips above into practice. Some of the main features of Education Pro are:
