International Youth Day – if you could talk to yourself as a child, what would you say?
12th August 2015
Imagine if you were given the opportunity to travel through space and time in order to write to yourself, as a child.
Let’s say that, due to the logistics of time travel, you’re only allowed to write a single sentence.
What would you say?
We think that most people would say something like this:
“It might feel as though the world is a scary place, but it’s not as bad as it seems now. There are lots of good things out there, and lots of people who love you. So don’t worry, be happy.”
OK, that’s three sentences. But the point remains that some kids have it tough, and often, a kind word can make all the difference.
International Youth Day & Kidscape
August 12th is International Youth Day. To mark the occasion, we’ve teamed up with Kidscape, one of the leading charities dedicated to addressing the problem of bullying. They aim to provide young people, parents, and professionals with the skills they need to tackle bullying and safeguarding issues across the UK.
Like Impero Software, Kidscape are committed to ensuring that children can live, learn, and play in a safe and nurturing environment. And like us, Kidscape understand that few things trouble kids more than bullying.
It’s bad enough when kids are bullied by their peers. But the sheer cruelty of cyberbullying, which can be devastating even for adults, is the sort of thing that no child should have to put up with.
So to mark International Youth Day, we want to raise awareness of bullying and cyberbullying among adults across the UK. And a great way of doing this is through encouraging adults to remember how scary and lonely the world can seem when you’re a child.
One Message to Me
When you’re young, you’re lacking in experience, confidence, and resilience. Which means that, when dealing with bullies, many children can feel helpless and alone.
It’s at times like this that the support and understanding of those who love you the most is not just important – it’s critical.
That’s where our time machine comes in. Because who’s more qualified to talk kids through their troubling times than their older, wiser selves?
Our campaign, which we’re calling One Message to Me, is our time machine. Here’s what you have to do:
- Write a single sentence message to your childhood self, and write it on a large piece of paper.
- Take a photo of yourself holding the message to the camera.
- Post the photo to your Facebook page.
- Underneath your post, nominate three or more friends to write their own messages to their own childhood selves.
- Encourage everyone who takes part to make a donation, no matter how small, to Kidscape.
Or if you just want to make a donation to this wonderful cause, click here to visit our fundraising page or text OMTM55 followed by an amount to 70070.
So spread the word and donate whatever you can. We’re committed to empowering kids, and to ensuring that they can grow up in a world in which they feel safe and valued.
