Formed back in 2008 through the merger of Iðnskólinn í Reykjavík and Fjöltækniskólinn, Technical College Reykjavik is the biggest private college institution in Iceland. Made up of 13 schools, students can choose from 50 vocational and specialist programmes and 800 courses in a range of subjects from Marine Engineering to Multimedia. With frequent use of desktops and a desire to purchase more laptops in the future, Technical College Reykjavik identified a need for a classroom management tool.
Prior to Education Pro, Technical College Reykjavik had nothing in place for classroom management, making controlling all students in a class difficult. Projectors helped to demonstrate the processes for each task but, with large IT suites, not all students would have full visibility and understanding of the task at hand. These issues, along with the constant need to set up controlled machines, the IT team began to search for an appropriate solution.
Using the internet to look at various software alternatives, the IT team identified Education Pro, a consolidated solution for network management, classroom management and online safety. Following a demonstration of the functionality, Technical College Reykjavik trialled the product itself and discovered that the classroom management tools included would help to focus learning and save time for the IT team, confirming the decision to purchase Education Pro.
Implemented back in winter 2016, the Netstjóri (Network Administrator) at Technical College Reykjavik installed and managed Education Pro, pushing it out onto Windows 10 PCs without difficulty. Describing the deployment ‘as a delight’, the Netstjóri is continuing to train the whole of the teaching team so that functionality can be used independently.
Since installing Impero Education Pro, Technical College Reykjavik has realised a variety of benefits, including:
controlled classrooms: In large IT suites, teachers are able to broadcast their own screen across all student machines and work through a particular task, with complete focus from the students. Alternatively, teachers can project exemplary student work that is expected to aid student performance further.
saves money: Education Pro is a consolidated solution with a compact array of functionality allowing control of the digital classroom, management of the network, and creation of test machines, all within one piece of software – instead of purchasing multiple pieces of software.
one-to-one learning: Real-time monitoring allows teachers to visually see what each student is creating on their machine. Teachers can take control and advise their students when creating 3D Maya maps and supervise their performance throughout the lesson.
Q&A with Auðunn Jónsson, Netstjóri
how does Impero Education Pro focus learning in the classroom?
Across the 3D classrooms in the IT suites, there are 70-80 computers which the teachers need to control. These rooms have powerful computers with two screens and are used for Maya Maps. Education Pro helps to control the classroom, as teachers can broadcast their screen and demonstrate elements of a particular task; they can also take control and work with students on their machines. The teachers love it! Following some work in the 3D IT suites we forgot to add Impero back on and we immediately received tickets from the teachers who were looking for the console.
how does Impero Education Pro help create test environments for controlled assessments?
As a higher education establishment, Education Pro is used extensively to set up controlled assessments across various test locations throughout the school, usually once a week. Before Education Pro, setting up these 7 test rooms, with 20 devices in each, was time-consuming, especially when several tests need setting up at the same time. Through functionality to log on all computers, which only allow certain websites and lock down access to certain applications, test environments can be created effortlessly. Now teachers can easily set these machines up for themselves, at first I’d supervise and show them how to whitelist certain applications and websites but – because Education Pro is so easy to use – now I can leave them to do this self-sufficiently.
what are you next steps?
Although electricity costs are low in Iceland, we are planning to look into the wake-on-LAN and shut down features available in Education Pro. At the moment most of our machines are up and running 24/7, we’re hoping to have this pushed out by fall.
how would you sum up Impero Education Pro?
It’s easy to set up. I’ve had issues with every other server application – Education Pro is pretty good!
