Providing a creative environment to learn, S. Anselm’s School offers small class sizes to ensure all students, from nursery to age 18, are cared for and nurtured in every way they need. Available for both day students and boarders, S. Anselm’s required a solution to safeguard their students and monitor a variety of devices, including 80 PCs, 40 laptops, 70 iPads and a dedicated IT and innovation suite.
Despite not actively searching for a new solution back in 2013, S. Anselm’s had a few conversations with the Impero team regarding Impero Education Pro, but were not ready to make the change from their existing solution. While this solution provided all the functionality the school required at this point, it did not come without its problems. The product diminished PC performance and slowed machines down considerably and, with each new version release, PC and network performance was affected. This became too much of an issue for S. Anselm’s, and with a greater focus on safeguarding in education, S. Anselm’s began to look into the prospect of adopting Impero Education Pro.
Once reconnected with our team, the ICT Manager trialled Impero Education Pro on their own network where they got to truly appreciate the full functionality the software offered. With a combination of classroom management, network management and online safety, Impero Education Pro would be able to replace the school’s existing software and deal with any potential safeguarding issues, in line with government guidance and legislation and ISI, that was now a key priority.
With the help of instructions and support documents the implementation of Impero Education Pro proved very easy and straightforward. Any issues S. Anselm’s did have during this time were dealt with immediately by the support team who were able to provide solutions within minutes of the school’s ICT Manager making a request. Integrating the school’s active directory and users from the back end was also just as simple, a process which was carried out without duplicating users.
Since installing Impero Education Pro, S. Anselm’s School has realised a number of core benefits:
focuses learning: Some of the more technically proficient teachers aren’t afraid to use Impero Education Pro to lock down computers, monitor student activity and broadcast machines to create productive classrooms.
saves time: With integrated active directory, Impero Education Pro displays the user name of each student rather than the computer name. When a student has an issue on their machine the ICT Manager can simply sort by user name and remote into the machine with ease, without having to access the computer properties. This helps removes a lengthy process, especially when students are swapping between machines.
extra security: The school’s IT and pastoral care teams now know what is happening on all the devices throughout S. Anselm’s. With USB tracking, the IT team can track what is going on, what’s being plugged in and who’s using the devices, without needing to impose policies to block it down.
Q&A with Steve Waxman, ICT Manager
how has Education Pro helped you comply with ISI regulations?
As the ICT Manager at S. Anselm’s I’m responsible alongside my colleague for monitoring student activity online and dealing with online safety issues as they occur. Smoothwall helps to filter out inappropriate content, but we’re able to bolster this information further by utilising the live thumbnail view included in Impero Education Pro, which provides full visibility and transparency of what students are accessing online. We’ve noticed a huge reduction in students accessing gaming sites, as they know we can see what they’re doing and what they’re accessing. It’s great because that’s really helped to improve our bandwidth and internet connection. It’s also really helped us to comply with ISI regulations; during our latest inspection we said we were using Impero for safeguarding and that was that, no further investigation took place. It ticks all the boxes it needs to in that aspect.
how has Education Pro made your job easier?
As well as helping with my safeguarding responsibilities, Impero Education Pro allows us to easily apply different policies for different groups of students. Controlled printing is heavily enforced on our students – students are given a set amount of credits per week e.g. 40 per week with different weighting for printing in colour versus printing in black. This really helps to make students more aware about printing in colour. By providing different policies for different groups of students we can easily provide the college students, who need less supervision and have a greater workload, with more credits than say the pre-prep students who won’t need to print as often. When students exceed their printing credits they can simply request more via email where I will manage these by exception.
what are you next steps?
Impero Education Pro provides a lot of functionality. I want to ensure that S. Anselm’s is getting the most of the software and ensure we are utilising everything we need to. Getting more teachers to use the classroom management features included would be beneficial.
how would you summarise Impero Education Pro?
As a member of support staff working in the school environment, Impero Education Pro helps minimise students’ exposure to harmful websites. It removes the headaches and worries we have about safeguarding issues.
