World Mental Health Day 2018 – mental health in the changing world

4th October 2018

World Mental Health Day (October 10) is a day celebrated globally for mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. This year’s theme “Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World”, brings focus to what young people are facing in our world today. From cyberbullying to suicide, it’s important to teach young people about mental illness and well-being.

3 things to do this World Mental Health Day

  1. It’s okay not to be okay

Remove the stigma, it’s important to raise awareness about the issues. There are many threats on and offline that can impact someone well-being and mental health. Bullying, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, discrimination: talk about these issues, remove the stigma, tell people it’s okay not to be okay, and get them the advice and help they need.

  1. Ask and ask again

Sometimes people say they’re fine, when they’re not. It’s important to ask them, and ask them again, you’ll often find they’ll open up to you when asked again.

  1. Educate yourself and others about the warning signs

It’s important to be able to spot someone who may be suffering from poor well-being or mental health issues. Being able to support these people when they need it most is important.

Teaching young people is essential to support mental health. Take our quiz to understand the true impact of mental health worldwide. #WMHDay
