Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC)- the wellbeing wheel

Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC) is the national approach in Scotland that aims to ensure children and young people receive effective and appropriate support for their wellbeing.

Aimed at health and education professionals, GIRFEC places wellbeing at the heart of the approach, with emphasis on key factors of the wellbeing wheel.

The GIRFEC wellbeing wheel

The GIRFEC wellbeing wheel lays out eight areas under ‘four capacities’ of the Curriculum of Excellence that young people and children need in order to develop, progress and do well, both now and in the future. These areas and capacities ensure that the children and young people of Scotland are:

Successful learners

Achieving- Being supported and guided in learning and in the development of skills, confidence and self-esteem, at home, in school and in the community.

Nurtured- Having a nurturing place live in a family setting, with additional help when needed, or where required, in a suitable care setting.

Responsible citizens

Healthy- Having the highest attainable standards of physical and mental health, access to suitable healthcare, and support in learning to make healthy, safe choices.

Safe- Protected from abuse, neglect or harm at home, at school and in the community.

Effective contributors

Included- Having help to overcome social, educational, physical and economic inequalities, and being accepted as part of the community in which they live and learn.

Responsible- Having opportunities and encouragement to play active and responsible roles at home, in school and in the community, and where necessary, having appropriate guidance and supervision, and being involved in decisions that affect them.

Confident individual

Active- Having opportunities to take part in activities such as play, recreation and sport, which contribute to healthy growth and development, at home, in school and in the community.

Respected- Having the opportunity, along with parents and carers, to be heard and involved in decisions that affect them.

How can Impero Education Pro help meet the guidance under GIRFEC?

Impero Education Pro uses keyword libraries to detect and identify areas of risk that may put young people and children in danger. These libraries are categorised by topic such as adult content, bullying and trolling, counter-radicalisation, grooming, LGBT derogatory language, race and religious hatred, self-harm, sexting, suicide, weapons and violence and more.

These keyword libraries have been developed with the help of leading charities, organisations and young people to understand the terms and phrases associated with each safeguarding risk.

Impero Education Pro monitors the school network and when a keyword is detected, whether in an application, email, social media site, search engine, website or URL, the incident is captured.  Through Impero Education Pro, the capture is timestamped and logged with a screenshot, or video clip, to provide ‘who, what, where’ style information, putting the incident into context.

What’s more, Impero Education Pro gives school staff the power to manage classroom devices to ensure they are on task, whilst students are empowered through Confide, the anonymous reporting tool that gives students the opportunities to report any instances they believe are putting themselves or others at risk.
