Undergraduate work placement programmes at Impero

24th October 2017

With the employment market becoming more and more competitive for graduates, it’s worthwhile doing something that will give you a head start. Increasingly, employers want to appoint graduates who have real work experience alongside academic achievement. Undergraduate work placements are key to boosting your employability in the graduate market place. They can really make your CV shine and can enhance both your degree and future career. Statistical analysis offers evidence that participation in an undergraduate work placement scheme increases the chances of obtaining an upper second or higher degree class. It allows students to put the theoretical knowledge gained at University into practice.

Here at Impero, we want to give you that opportunity to excel in your future career. We truly recognize the benefits of a work placement programme and believe placement students can bring great value to our business. So much so, that we have welcomed three of our previous undergraduate work placement students back to work within the Impero team!

what do our current undergraduate work placement students think?

My undergraduate work placement has encouraged me to excel as a person and has been such a great experience so far. Although I have only been here for 4 months, I can already see huge benefits of a work placement. Not only has my confidence increased, I have also been able to improve my skills around organisation and time-management and supported by my colleagues have experienced the benefits of team-work. I have been given increasing responsibility as my role has developed and through constructive feedback, been made to feel that the work I complete is valuable to Impero. I was unsure which area of marketing I wanted to specialise in, but here I have been given the opportunity to become involved in a variety of different areas, whilst also integrating with different departments. The role has then been adapted to my strengths, whilst also developing areas to improve, so I am able to gain the most out of my year here.” – Jemima Cresswell, Marketing Assistant

I have only been at Impero for 4 months, but already I feel as though I am part of the team and trusted the same as any other member of staff. The team of placement students working together has helped us all develop individually and as a team, picking up different skills whilst learning from a management team who want the best for you. My course at University means that I still have to complete assignments whilst working at Impero and my manager Connor has helped me massively, taking a real care in my studies. Necessary days off have been allocated when assignments are approaching to ensure that all of my work is to a high standard. I would definitely recommend working for Impero and I love the environment within the office as there is a real sense of togetherness.” – James Gilliham, Business Development Executive

“In a few words, it is very difficult to cover all the amazing experiences that I have had at Impero so far. Before starting, I knew that Impero had a high employee satisfaction rating and after working here for a few months, I can truly say it is an amazing environment to work in and the people here really make an effort to welcome you. You can feel that you are part of a company that makes a difference to people’s lives and the experience I’ve gained so far has helped me immensely with my studies. I have really enjoyed my time here and I would definitely recommend working at Impero.” Thomas Blackburn, Business Development Executive

“Working at Impero has provided me a plethora of opportunities to grow and develop as a professional. The team at Impero are steadfast in trying to integrate us and help us become effective and efficient. It’s been a steep learning curve but both my manager and all others are more than happy to help with any issues that we have and provide insight and training on both a formal and informal basis.”Rob Vanbeck, Business Development Executive

“I am certainly enjoying my time at Impero and relishing the opportunity to learn from people much more experienced than me. Since I began my post 16 studies, I always had a passion for sales and I feel like I am in the ideal place to kick-start my career in the industry and gain some valuable experience at the same time. Alongside learning about sales and how the sales process works, I feel I have developed my knowledge on the inner workings of a professional company and how different departments work together to achieve corporate objectives and goals. In addition to this, I feel like I have learnt and experienced the demands of the role and which elements are key in maintaining levels of motivation to ensure targets are hit and a valuable contribution is made.”Liam Monk, Business Development Executive

“This undergraduate work placement has given me substantial experience and knowledge in sales. It has helped me to improve my time management and organisation, as well as my confidence when dealing with customers. I would recommend Impero to anyone who would like experience in IT, which is vital for the future.” – Harry Saunders, Business Development Executive

returning as a graduate

Amy and Courtney, just a couple of our previous placement students, have returned to Impero following their graduation. Below, they have described how Impero helped them to put their final year at University in context, and their experiences since returning as a graduate. It really shows the opportunities and benefits of a work placement programme, not only gained throughout the year, but also after the placement year ends.

“Choosing a placement year at Impero, a small and fast-growing company, not only helped me gain a tonne of experience in the marketing industry, it also helped me to provide practical examples of how theories and practices are utilised in a real-life company throughout my final year at uni. Before Impero, I’d read about, and even written coursework regarding, a CRM system, but until I actually worked with one I didn’t truly understand the importance of such a system. Working with a small and close-knit team was amazing and also provided me with the opportunity to return to Impero as a graduate, Every day, I’m given more opportunities to experience different areas of marketing and progress my career further.” – Amy Barker, Marketing Executive

“During my year placement at Impero, I was able to put my theoretical knowledge gained from my first two years at university into practice. Being given a plethora of exciting opportunities and projects, I was able to take my professional experiences from Impero and reapply them to theory upon my return to University in final year. I believe the opportunities at Impero and the supportive nature of my colleagues provided me with the foundation to complete university with confidence and to graduate with a first class honours degree. Since being invited back to Impero earlier this year, I have continued to add to the depth and breadth of both my skills and knowledge, but most importantly, I have continued to love what I do!” – Courtney Goodsell, Product Marketing Executive (Online Safety)
