With Home Office statistics indicating an increase in Hate crime alongside growing incidents related to extremist beliefs , expanding suicide and self-harm rates , and bullying incidents, schools are bound to be feeling the pressure when it comes to keeping students safe online. Here at Impero, we want to ensure that we are helping schools to do everything in their power to keep their students safe online. That’s why we’ve partnered with several charities and specialist organisations in the online safety field to help develop and inform our online safety offering. Our online safety partners’ best practice knowledge ensures we stay up-to-date and able to respond quickly to changes in the online safety landscape.
discover more about 3 of our online safety partners
Over the years, Impero has formed a number of online safety partnerships across the globe. You can find out more about our extensive and growing list of online safety partners here, or see below to discover how we’ve worked with three of them.
SafeBAE are charity founded by sexual assault survivors Daisy Coleman, Ella Fairon and Jada Smith, who appeared in the NETFLIX documentary Audrie & Daisy. This survivor-founded organisation seeks to educate students about healthy relationships, dating violence and sexual assault prevention, alongside survivor self-care. The documentary describes how the sexual assault survivors were re-victimised after their attacks from other students, both online and offline.
With a common objective to keep students safe, Impero and SafeBAE partnered to help provide schools with the tools and resources they need to keep students safe online and educate young people about acceptable behaviour online. This includes keeping them safe from sexting, sexual assault and related instances online bullying. SafeBAE also helped contribute to our online safety handbook, offering some best practice advice for those who are responding/approaching a student who might be identified as being sexually groomed by a peer.
Hope not Hate
Back in 2016, Impero partnered with Britain’s largest anti-racism organisation, HOPE not hate , to help develop our race and religious hatred keyword library available as part of our flagship product, Impero Education Pro. This helps to identify any student that may be potentially using derogatory language in relation to race or religion, or victims of race and religious hatred.
This partnership has not only helped inform our keyword library but has also helped us provide some best practice advice when opening up dialogue with students around race and religious hate. See section 7.11 of our online safety handbook to view this advice.
Digital citizenship Institute
Another one of Impero’s online safety partners is the Institute of Digital Citizenship. A specialist organisation which aims to educate individuals (students, educators, administrators and parents) to not only navigate the digital world safely but to also improve their understanding of it . Sharing a common ethos, Impero formed a partnership with the Institute of Digital Citizenship and have since been involved in many activities, helping to stay up-to-date in the digital world and offer best practice advice to create good digital citizens. Such advice can be found in our whitepaper: Digital Citizenship: A Holistic Primer, which aims to helps students to learn to use social media for social good. Some areas of focus include:
- Learning about the three core themes and 6 elements of digital citizenship, such as digital law, digital literacy and digital security
- Gaining guidance on what schools should consider when creating a digital citizenship plan
- Classroom examples of digital citizenship in practice from educators
As the digital world expands, often so do the threats. That’s why, here at Impero, we will continue to work with our online safety partners to expand on our suite of online safety features and continue to provide best practice advice for many individuals, whether it be a concerned teacher, parent or a friend.
